DIY cut out boots

Cut out boots… What a weird idea. Boots that let the cold and rain in – really ?! Nearly as practical as sleeveless coats and short sleeved jumpers… But fashion has its ways and when something odd comes out, before you know it we’re all crazy for the latest trend. And I have wanted a pair of cut out boots since this post. Meaning I have been planning to DIY them for a while ! I love cut out DIYs, there the easiest and yet the results can be stunning if you get it right.

I have had these black ankle boots for a while now, in fact they’re the ones I covered in stars back in September 2012, remember ?! Since then, I have pulled off the stars (they actually stuck very well, I had to give them a real tug which didn’t do much good to the faux leather I have to admit) and preped these basic boots for a new customistion. The below tutorial is pretty long but that is because I really tried to break it down to be sure you can follow the steps at home. Every part of the project is super simple though, so you should be able to make your own pair of cut out boots in no time.

Hope you like it !

To make cut-out ankle boots like mine, YOU WILL NEED :

– A pair of ankle boots you can cut into (fear not, it will all go well!)
– Two pieces of leather measuring 1m x 3cm.
– Two 3,5cm buckles – I got mine off an old pair of sandles.
– A sharp knife.
– Sharp scissors.
– A piece of chalk.
– A needle and thread.
– A leather punched (but don’t worry, if you haven’t got one there is an alternative)

Step 1 : Draw the sections you wish to cut out on your boots with the chalk. In this project, I decided to do rounded shapes on each side of the boot, leaving a tongue in the middle of the front. You’ll see why !

Step 2 : Using your scissors, carefully cut out these sections. Make sure your design is symetrical and the same on each shoe. Take your time and get it right ! Tutoriel boots ajourées do it yourself diy

Step 3 : Now draw two 4cm lines down the centre of the tongues you left at the front of your shoes. Place them towards the middle of the tongues, around about where your ankle starts. You need to draw the lines approx. 1cm apart from each other.

Step 4 : Slit down these lines with your knife. PLEASE DON’T CUT YOUR FINGERS OFF !

Step 5 : On the back of the shoes, draw two 4cm lines this time with approx 1.5cm in between. Again, slit with your knife.

Étape 6 : Take one of your pieces of leather and make a hole approx. 1cm from the end. If you don’t have a leather puncher, use the tip of a large pair of scissors.

Step 7 : Poke the metal piece on the buckle through this hole…

Step 8 : And fold the leather back over the metal bar.

Étape 9 : Stitch in place, nice and strong.

Repeat so that you have one for each shoe.

Now put it all together !

Step 10 : Take your right foot shoe. Push the strap through the front hole (left to right) with the wrong side of the leather against the shoe. Go under your shoe and back through the loop in the same direction so the strap wraps all the way around your shoe.

Step 11 : Leave the buckle to hang on the left of your shoe and take the end of the strap around the back. Push it through the back loop.

Step 12 : Go all the way around the ankle of your shoe again but this time don’t go through any loops.

Step 13 : Push the end of the strap through the buckle and cut off the extra leather. Make sure you leave enough space for about three holes.

Step 14 : Smooth the end of the strap with your scissors.

Step 15 : Punch a few holes in the end of your strap and buckle up !

Do the same again on the other shoe, only in the opposite direction.

Cute, right ?!! Bring it on ! And if you do make your own pair, don’t forget to send me a snap, I’d love to see (@clonesnclowns on twitter / @clonesnclownsblog on instagram / !).
